Sunday Bun

L. A. Marzulli

23And He was saying to them, “You are from below, I am from above; you are of this world, I am not of this world. 24“Therefore I said to you that you will die in your sins; for unless you believe that I am He, you will die in your sins.25So they were saying to Him, “Who are You?” Jesus said to them, “What have I been saying to you from the beginning? John 8:23-25

The scene from John’s account or the good new, is this.  Jesus/Yeshua is addressing the religious leaders of His day.  They do not believe he is the Messiah and in fact are ticked off at Him because He is healing on the Sabbath.  He answers with an incredible, statement that is astounding in its implications: You will die in your sins for unless you believe that I am He, you will die in your sins.

For the most part the religious leaders did just that, they died in their sins.  They made sure the Son of Man was put death and the Romans carried out their dirty work: so one man would perish instead of an entire nation.

A few years ago when our children were still living with us a man who had followed the same Guru that I had followed, called and asked if he could stay at our house.  He lived on the east coast and was being called out to the west coast to do a job.  He lamented that none of his “guru” friends would take him in.  I talked to the Wifey and we let him stay in our small spare bedroom.  He lived with us for two weeks and he watched how our family interacted.  He ate with us several times and at night, after the children were in bed, the two of us would talk.  The last night of his stay with us he commented on how there was peace in our house.  I told him that was because of Jesus/Yeshua.  We then began to talk about the guru and meditation.  I stated that while the guru dispensed a form of meditation it in no way could deal with the central issue of mankind, our sin nature.  We discussed this for a while, and at the end of our conversation I was prompted by the spirit of the living God to tell, him, you will die in your sins.

This statement really hit him and he hung his head and was quite.  He left the next day.  About two weeks later I received a letter from him telling me that he had given his life to the Messiah, his newly found redeemer.   What had hit him and changed his mind about his need for salvation was the realization that he would die in his sins.

We have an advocate who sits on the right hand of the Father, Jesus/Yeshua.  He came to earth and gave his life as a ransom for many.  The good news for every human being on this planet is this.  If we believe on Him who was sent to us, and confess our sins, they are wiped clean from us.  We are a new creature in the Messiah.  In other words we will not die in our sins and in fact He will change our behavior so we will no longer do the things we used to do.  This incredible gift is found nowhere else on this planet.  No other religion, ism, or world view, offers this.

For those of us out there that say they have no sin and do not need a redeemer, think about this for a moment.  Have you ever lied, stolen something, hated someone, coveted what some person had and you did not? Have you ever cursed or gotten mad?  Do you hold grudges against those who have hurt you?  The list is endless and it the hallmark of the human condition, sin.  However, the good news is this, we/you/us do not have to die in our sins.  He takes them away when we are born from above, by the spirit of the living God.  He loves us and in fact came to die for us to free us from the bondage of sin and death.

There is a redeemer

There is a redeemer, Jesus, God’s own Son
Precious Lamb of God, Messiah, Holy One
Jesus my redeemer name above all names
Precious Lamb of God, Messiah oh, for sinners slain

Thank You oh my Father for giving us Your Son
And leaving Your Spirit ’til the work on Earth is done
